Journal Submissions

The SJIPL is dedicated to published student-authored work on topics related to Information Privacy Law. As such, the Journal only accepts submissions from students who are currently enrolled in a J.D., L.L.M, or equivalent program.

The Journal welcomes submissions for the publication of Articles and Commentary Posts.
An Article is a formal publication that typically explores an issue in-depth and then advances a novel take on that issue. Article submissions should be between 7,500 and 20,000 words, including footnotes, but Articles that exceed or fall below these parameters in length may also be considered at the discretion of the Articles Editor. Article submissions should be accompanied by the author’s CV and an abstract of no more than 250 words.

The SJIPL publishes Articles once per year in an online paginated edition released at the end of the Spring semester or early in the Summer. Only a limited number of submissions are selected to be published as Articles each year. Submissions are reviewed on a rolling basis and authors will be informed if their submission is selected for publication.

A Commentary Post is a more casual submission that identifies and provides commentary on a trending issue. Commentary Posts are usually two to three pages in length and are published in the Journal’s online blog rather than in the paginated edition. Authors may use any format when citing sources for a Commentary Post, including hyperlinks, Chicago style, or Bluebook. Commentary Posts are published on a monthly basis, on the 25th of each month beginning in September and pausing in May for the summer break. The Journal will not be publishing in the months of May, June, July, August, December, and January. Submissions of Commentary Posts must be made before the first of the month, and if a piece is submitted after the first, it may be considered for publication in the next month in which the Journal is publishing.

Evaluations

The Journal typically takes approximately two weeks to evaluate a submission for potential publication. We begin accepting submissions for the Paginated Edition in late August and review submissions on a rolling basis, closing submission acceptance upon the filling of the Journal’s available space. Submissions made during these times will be published in the annual edition at the end of Spring Semester. Submissions of Commentary Posts for publication in the Monthly Edition may be submitted at any time and will be reviewed on a rolling basis for publication in the following month from which the submission was made.

Submissions will be evaluated on the basis of content (i.e., whether the content is of scholarly and publishable quality, whether the topic is relevant and interesting to the readership of the Journal, whether the content is sufficiently related to issues of privacy and cybersecurity), page length, and quality of writing, sintax, and structure. Authors should be sure to consult the author’s checklist below to ensure their submission meets the minimum requirements:
